Embraced more than 10 years ago by the more than 9 million residents of London, Santander Cycles is now one of the most popular bike-sharing systems.
London has always been an innovative, vibrant, and ambitious city. As a pioneer in urban mobility, it quickly developed innovative public transport infrastructure. However, even with a state-of-the-art public transport system, the UK capital was still one of the world's most congested cities. That's why, from the moment we decided to launch our international bike sharing project, London was one of our first target destinations.
A successful solution from day one!
In 2010, we launched London's first public bike sharing system. The success of Santander Cycles was instantaneous! After less than a trimester evaluating the program, we already had more than 90,000 subscribers, and more than a million rides had been taken. Thus, proving the necessity of our bike share system in London.
12 years and 100 million rides later
The popularity of the system has continued to grow over the years, and in September 2022, Santander Cycles recorded its 12th consecutive month of record ridership. More than 12.6 million trips have been taken on the system's bikes in recent months. These historical records demonstrate that the solution has become an essential part of Londoners' urban mobility.
These recent successes are pushing Santander Cycles to think even bigger! In October 2022, the solution is expanding and modernizing, welcoming the first E-FIT pedal-assist e-bikes into its fleet. 500 E-FIT e-bikes have been integrated into the fleet, providing the city's residents and tourists all the flexibility they need, with a modern and dynamic mixed fleet.
