HONOLULU – Bikeshare is coming to Honolulu! Bikeshare Hawaii today announced it has signed an agreement with Secure Bike Share as its financing and operating partner. With this contract in place, Secure Bike Share and PBSC Urban Solutions will provide 1,000 bicycles and 100 stations for Honolulu’s first public bicycle share program. Program leaders are anticipating a summer launch.

“This is a milestone day for Bikeshare Hawaii as this agreement with Secure Bike Share paves the way to launch Oahu’s first comprehensive bikeshare program,” said Lori McCarney, CEO of Bikeshare Hawaii. “Secure Bike Share has demonstrated its belief in Honolulu’s bikeshare program through its multi-million-dollar investment in our bikeshare equipment. We will work side-by-side with Secure Bike Share and the City and County of Honolulu, all with a shared goal to deliver an exceptional and self-sustaining program.”

“We are thrilled to have 1,000 bikes in production and look forward to launching a new, affordable and healthy transportation option for Hawaii residents and visitors,” added McCarney.

“We are extremely excited about this opportunity to partner with Bikeshare Hawaii and PBSC Urban Solutions to develop Honolulu’s next-generation transport system,” said Garth Mathews, Joint Chief Executive Officer and founder of Secure Bike Share. “After nearly 40 years in the transport sector, we hope to use our experience internationally to improve the service offering throughout Honolulu and contribute to an overall cleaner and healthier environment.”

Bikeshare Hawaii will launch this summer using equipment provider PBSC Urban Solutions’ hardware and software, renowned for its quality and smart technology. The 100 stations will be conveniently placed from Chinatown to Diamond Head, no further than a five-minute walk apart so that a user never needs to worry about where to pick up or drop off one of the 1,000 bikes. The bikes are designed for trips of one to two miles in street clothes. The primary goal of the system is to provide convenient mobility in urban Honolulu for the vast majority of people who don’t bike now.  In many situations bikeshare provides a cheaper, healthier, friendlier and faster alternative to driving and parking.

Additional financial support for Bikeshare Hawaii include the City and County of Honolulu, the State of Hawaii, Ulupono Initiative, private sector sponsors, foundations and individuals.

“Creating a community that accommodates different modes of transportation within Honolulu’s urban core has taken a major step forward with the signed agreement between Bikeshare Hawaii and Secure Bike Share,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “Our administration’s goal of creating a bicycle-friendly network within Oahu’s most heavily traveled corridors is gaining momentum as more of our residents and visitors realize the benefits of cycling to get around. Bikeshare Hawaii will make this experience even more convenient and accessible to a larger number of people.”

“As a major alternative transportation system, Bikeshare Hawaii is a viable option for a wide range of customers, serving both Hawaii residents and visitors, and will connect people to the places they love whether they live, work or play in urban Honolulu,” added Ben Trevino, president and COO of Bikeshare Hawaii. “Once launched, our system will be one of the largest and most convenient systems in the country. We are super excited for the bikes to arrive!”
